Illustrative cash-balance projection

Example household · Six-month loss of primary income · 12-month projection

Example only — not your results
Fictional household with A$12,000 accessible cash, A$7,600 monthly income and A$6,450 regular monthly expenses, plus savings and investment contributions. The solid line shows baseline cash; the dashed line shows cash with the hypothetical shock. Negative cash indicates a modelled shortfall, not available savings.

How long could your savings last?

Savings runway is the period your available cash could cover your expenses. How long your savings last depends on available cash, household income, expenses and the financial scenario being explored.

Simple hypothetical example: A$15,000 in savings and A$5,000 in monthly expenses would cover approximately three months of expenses, if there were no other income or changes in costs.

Real household cash flows can be more complex. Ongoing income, repayments, contributions and one-off costs can all affect the projected balance. This simple example is separate from the fictional household shown in the chart above.

Explore different financial scenarios

ShockProof models four hypothetical shocks. Each changes a different part of household cash flow; the projections depend on the figures and assumptions entered.

Job loss

Explore how a temporary loss of primary household income could affect available cash while regular expenses continue.

Unexpected expenses

Model a one-off, unplanned cost and its effect on the household's projected cash balance.

Interest rate increases

Explore a hypothetical increase in loan repayments and how it could affect monthly cash flow.

Recession

Explore assumed changes to income, living costs and investment values during an economic downturn.

Understanding emergency savings

Emergency savings are accessible cash set aside for unplanned expenses or interruptions to income. The period they cover varies between households because expenses, income sources and the size and duration of a financial shock differ.

A hypothetical projection describes what could happen under selected assumptions. It does not establish financial safety or guarantee future outcomes.
